Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the stale French bread or baguette into 1-inch cubes and layer them in the baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and press down gently to ensure even soaking. Let sit for about 15 minutes.
  5. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the mixture and gently fold them in.
  6. Dot small pats of butter over the top of the mixture.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed.
  8. In a saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and rum over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  9. Serve the bread pudding warm, drizzled with rum sauce.
