- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter.
- Cut the stale French bread or baguette into 1-inch cubes and layer them in the baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and press down gently to ensure even soaking. Let sit for about 15 minutes.
- If using raisins, sprinkle them over the mixture and gently fold them in.
- Dot small pats of butter over the top of the mixture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed.
- In a saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and rum over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
- Serve the bread pudding warm, drizzled with rum sauce.
