Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Combine warm water with brown sugar in a bowl, sprinkle yeast over it, and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the foamy yeast mixture with oil and flour in a large bowl. Knead until smooth and slightly sticky (5-10 minutes).
  3. Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 45 minutes until doubled.
  4. Punch down dough, divide into 24 pieces, roll each into a stick, and let rest for 25 minutes.
  5. Bring 10 cups of water to a simmer in a pot and dissolve baking soda into it.
  6. Boil each pretzel stick in water for 30 seconds per side, then drain on paper towels.
  7. Preheat oven to 450°F, beat egg with water, brush on pretzel sticks and sprinkle with salt.
  8. Bake pretzel sticks on a parchment-lined sheet for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
