Step‑by‑Step Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and mix until well combined. Gradually incorporate 2-3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of baking powder until a smooth ball of dough forms. Divide the dough and tint each part with gel food coloring.
- Roll out each colored dough portion between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thickness. Layer them on top of each other, gently pressing down to adhere. Roll into a tight log and wrap in plastic wrap; chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- After chilling, remove the log from the refrigerator. Let it sit for a few minutes, then slice into 1/4 inch thick rounds, revealing the spirals. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cookie slices for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers remain soft.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
