Ingredients

For the Base
  • 1 cup Water Base liquid for syrup consistency; no substitutions necessary.
  • 1 cup Packed Brown Sugar Adds sweetness and depth; can substitute with granulated sugar or honey for a different flavor profile.
  • ½ cup Pumpkin Puree Essential for flavor; use plain pumpkin puree (not pie filling) for best results.
For the Spices
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Provides warmth and a signature spice note; substitute with pumpkin pie spice for an all-in-one flavor.
  • ½ teaspoon Ground Ginger Adds zest and complements the pumpkin; fresh ginger can enhance the boldness of the syrup.
  • ¼ teaspoon Grated Nutmeg Offers a nutty aroma; can be replaced with ground nutmeg if fresh is unavailable.
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves Enhances the syrup's spice profile; omit if not preferred or use allspice as a substitute.
For the Flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Maple Extract Imparts a rich maple flavor; substitute with real maple syrup for natural sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Provides a warm, sweet note; no direct substitute; consider other flavor extracts if desired.

Equipment

  • small saucepan

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of packed brown sugar, and ½ cup of pumpkin puree in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon of grated nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Gently heat the syrup base just below a boil for about 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Lower the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens to the desired consistency.
  4. Remove from heat and whisk in 1 teaspoon each of maple and vanilla extract.
  5. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a glass jar or airtight container for storage.

Notes

Ensure you don't rush the simmering stage to achieve the right syrup consistency. Taste the syrup as you simmer to adjust sweetness to your preference.
